The NHRA 2010 season has gotten off to a roaring start, and in just two days, another famous race kicks off with something old and something new. Thursday is the opening day of the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, a race that has had more than its share of dynamic moments. This race is the season kickoff for the Pro Stock Motorcycle class, and for the first time ever, it’s the official start of the new Pro Mod class for the NHRA. (continued)

The track services division of Summit Motorsports Park has been busy with several projects over the course of the dismal season, and one of the results of their labor is going to shorten downtime for track cleanup by a bunch! The crew has just taken delivery of the completely rebuilt vacuum truck that you see in the picture here. This new machine will make a huge difference when it comes to cleaning and prepping the track. The oversized six-wheeled vacuum cleaner was even painted to match the rest of the fleet of track vehicles on hand. (continued)

We are just six weeks away from the beginning of another season of racing, and if you’re feeling anything like I am, it can’t get here soon enough. It’s been a grueling winter here in the Great Lakes region, and the next time I see a snowflake, I’d prefer that it was on some whimsical postcard! So what do you look forward to? Is the national event on the top of your list, or maybe the NAPA Night Under Fire? Despite my overwhelming affinity for nitromethane, and nostalgia races, I’ve noticed that I spend more time looking forward to something a bit more home grown. I look forward to the points races! Local Racers Heading To State Championships

We just learned that a couple of our regular Summit motorsports Park competitors have a new reason to celebrate. Kyle Lang and Phil Hurst, both Norwalk High School students, have been spending some of their off-season on the school’s wrestling team. Anyone that knows anything about that sport knows how tough it is. Despite the odds, both Kyle and Phil are headed to the Ohio State Wrestling Championships, March 4-6, at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, which is in the Ohio State University Campus in Columbus. The Super Chevy Show's Shoebox category will make it possible for those classic Chevys of the past to do more than take a Sunday cruise down Main Street. This year, those classic cars can race down the track against other classic cars.

Not long ago on the drag racing website Yellow Bullet, a racer was referring to another local track in one of the site’s forums, and a problem that is said to exist there. Another racer made a statement in response, and said “the problem is that nearly everyone that races there also races at Norwalk, and that place makes good tracks look bad!” If you’ve been paying any attention at all this week, it’s blatantly obvious that more than a few professional racers were less than thrilled with the accommodations in Arizona. That’s the same group of racers that have come out with nothing by praises for this track, the same track that was recently voted “Dragstrip of the Year” in the Competition Plus Dot Com balloting. Finals in Arizona

Cory McClenathan and Jack Beckman won their final rounds Monday at the delayed NHRA Arizona Nationals. McClenathan's win gives him the Full Throttle points lead in Top Fuel, and despite his final round loss, John Force remains atop the Funny Car points. Weather delays Sunday had moved racing into the early evening, and deteriorating conditions forced the postponement of racing. NHRA officials called a halt to Sunday’s racing after three rounds of Top Fuel and Funny Car and one round of Pro Stock and scheduled completion for Monday morning. More rain Monday delayed the final outcome, and the nitro cars didn't hit the track until 2:45 p.m. Arizona time. (continued)

For those that were not aware of all the details of the Antron Brown accident at the Arizona Nationals yesterday, there is some very sad news. The left rear tire that was the assumed cause of the accident, struck a woman in the spectator area. The woman who was struck by the tire was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix last evening. The tire became detached from Antron Brown's dragster following an incident during the first round of eliminations. Brown was not injured. The entire NHRA community is deeply saddened by today's incident and sends its thoughts and prayers to the woman's family and friends.
